Wargaming Puts a WWI Legend In Your Hands

Wargaming, the National Museum of the Royal Navy, and Ballista Digital have recreated the HMS Caroline in an exciting augmented reality app.

We’ll be honoring the anniversary of The Battle of Jutland and its subsequent exhibition at the National Museum of the Royal Navy with a special augmented reality app of HMS Caroline, the only vessel in existence that engaged in the battle. While still permanently anchored in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the famed warship was recreated in an AR Experience App by Ballista Digital, who are a leading producer of history-based apps for museums.

Visitors to the museum can download the app for iOS and Android when they visit the National Museum of the Royal Navy, so can you! Through this, you can see a 3D model of the ship within the Jutland exhibition on your mobile device, as well as find out more about the story of this incredible ship.

The Battle of Jutland was the defining naval battle of the First World War. Lasting over 36 hours from May 31 to June 1, 1916, it is often considered a German victory because of the number of British lives lost. However, there was a huge impact on the vessels in the battle. At the end of the battle, the British still held naval superiority. Only two British dreadnoughts were damaged, leaving 23 dreadnoughts and four battlecruisers still able to fight. German forces had only 10 dreadnoughts.

If you’re visiting the Jutland exhibition, there are also two guns on display that were involved in the battle: a large 105mm deck gun from the German destroyer B98, and a smaller 2-pounder gun from HMS Narborough. The exhibition also showcases ensigns flown by British warships at the Battle of Jutland. The largest flag, from the dreadnought battleship HMS Bellerophon, measures around 2.6m by 5.3m.
