Domination Event Interview

Domination Event has been busy igniting fans’ interests. With it comes an innovative twist on World of Tanks’ mechanics. Players will have three vehicles at their disposal: the AMX 50 B (D), the Object 140 (D) and the Т110Е5 (D)—all Tier 10. When their vehicle is turned to scrap—no need to worry—you can respawn and head out in a new tank.

Dotted around the maps, players can find special Resupply Points to restock and repair their vehicles. There are also several flags to be captured, which can be taken to specific places on the map to earn Victory Points.

In light of this new event, we decided to sit down with Maxim Chuvalov, World of Tanks Marketing Manager, to get some insight on this exciting new event.

This event is a departure from the play style/mechanics that a lot of players are used to. Why did you decide to try this new type of mechanic?

Yeah, the mechanics are completely new to World of Tanks. Some of them are long-awaited by our players. The format of time-limited events was created to bring fun and diversity for those who want to try out different types of gameplay. Also, it is a very good mechanism to get players’ feedback. We already held 3 events before: Racing Mode, Football and Winter Showdown—an old school pixel tank battle. Each of them was extremely popular among players and we understood that our approach is right.

This set of new mechanics will turn World of Tanks battles into fast-paced, tactical combat for those who want pure action and lots of fun. Also, it will allow every player to roll out in Tier 10 tanks and feel what it’s like to drive those steel monsters.

What was the inspiration for Domination Event?

The core idea was to provide the ultimate shoot-out but also keep a tactical element. We have a team which is focused on designing and prototyping potential events, so the inspiration comes from many different sources. Here we have a strong focus not on the setting itself (like football or racing events) but on the gameplay, so it is a mix of popular PvP mechanics.

Why Tier 10 vehicles? And why the AMX 50 B (D), the Object 140 (D) and the Т110Е5 (D)?

10 were selected to provide every player the possibility to try them and also because Tier 10s are the ultimate war machines in World of Tanks—the best fit for such action-packed battles. Speaking of the exact tank models—they were picked as signature tanks representing different main types of World of Tanks gameplay: agile medium tanks for wolf packs (Object 140) to deliver flags, intercept enemy flag tanks; tank heavies (T110E5) to stand their ground, controlling crucial points and block damage; auto-reloader (AMX 50 B) for huge DPM, especially when using resupply zones effectively.

Why were Ghost Town, Sand River and Mines chosen for Domination Event?

There is a long game design story behind the event. We have organized many internal and external focus tests to gather feedback. We have tested loads of maps for this event and the different settings for each of them as well. Those maps have shown the best potential for the mechanics of Domination.

What was the inspiration for the Ice Bound map? Will we see it in normal World of Tanks or is it just for Domination Event?

The map was created specially for the event and even experienced players will notice that it is based on two other winter maps with a re-assembled landscape, and with the addition of new objects. For now, it is hard to say whether the map will be available in Random Battles or other game modes in the future. The design was mainly created to match the requirements of the new mechanics.

Any advice for players?

Have fun and do not forget about team work—it may not look important at first glance, but the gameplay will require lots of cooperation to secure the victory.
