Crafting Games, Growing Together: The VFX Experience at Wargaming

Wenjie Yin has always believed that great games start from a genuine love for them. Over the years, she’s transformed herself from a 3D Artist into a VFX(Visual Effects) Specialist, driven by curiosity and a passion for learning. Now at Wargaming Shanghai, she works with a diverse international team, where creativity, collaboration, and personal growth are part of everyday life—turning her vision into experiences that players around the world can enjoy.

Q: You are only one member in VFX team in Shanghai and the rest of the VFX team and your manager are primarily based in Germany. How does your team maintain open and seamless communication while working remotely?

A:

When I first joined, I was a little concerned. Our team is spread across different countries and time zones, so I wondered if communication would be a challenge. But Wargaming has very clear processes that make collaboration smooth and efficient. For example, we have regular sync meetings every two weeks to align on design direction, production priorities, and schedules. If something urgent comes up in between, we’re free to send a message or jump on a quick call—there’s no need to wait for a formal meeting.

What really makes a difference is how open and inclusive the team is. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re located—everyone listens and welcomes new ideas. Because our team is so diverse, we get a lot of different perspectives in discussions, and Wargaming truly values that diversity.

Q: How does your lead support your career development in this cross-cultural environment?

A:
One thing I really appreciate about Wargaming is how proactive our leads are in supporting career development. My lead regularly arranges one-on-one sessions with me, not just to discuss project progress or tasks, but also to understand my long-term career goals and development plans. He listens to where I want to go in my career and gives me practical advice. Based on my interests and ambitions, he even adjusts my assignments to help me grow in the areas I care about.

When I first joined the team, I wasn’t sure whether I should focus more on deepening my technical skills or on refining my artistic style. My lead provided helpful suggestions and recommended learning resources and courses to support me.

Since we’re an international team, he’s also very mindful of different cultural backgrounds and communication styles. He makes sure everyone has a chance to express their ideas and discuss their personal development. It’s an inclusive and supportive environment where I feel encouraged to explore new directions and take on new challenges.

Q: How do you collaborate with designers, artists, and developers to bring visual effects to life?

A:
Collaboration at Wargaming is very hands-on and efficient. Everyone is open to sharing ideas. We usually start with brainstorming sessions—designers focus on the visual impact, developers help us stay aware of performance optimization, and I work on finding the balance between the two in VFX.

Our pace is pretty fast. We often create quick prototypes, test them early, and gather feedback from different teams. It’s a very direct and effective way to work. Wargaming encourages everyone to participate in decision-making, so no matter what role you’re in, your voice is heard. Most of our final results are the product of teamwork and continuous fine-tuning.

Q: Can you share a cross-team collaboration that left a deep impression on you?

A:
One project really stood out for me. We had to find the right balance between impressive visual effects and smooth gameplay performance. At first, there were a lot of different opinions—some people wanted the effects to be flashier, while others were concerned about the impact on performance.

Instead of rushing to a decision, we worked closely together, testing different solutions and iterating based on feedback from both the art and development teams. In the end, after a lot of teamwork and effort, we found a balance that prioritized performance while preserving as much of our visual quality as possible.

At Wargaming, problem-solving is always a collaborative process. It’s not about settling—it’s about working together to achieve the best possible balance between creativity and technical excellence.

Q: How does Wargaming support your learning and personal growth?

A:
Here, personal growth isn’t just something we talk about—it’s something we act on. My lead plays an active role in helping me plan my career path, offering advice and support along the way.

Wargaming also provides practical resources like English training, which makes working with global teams a lot easier. I’ve personally benefited a lot from this—over just half a year, my English skills improved by an entire level, which gave me much more confidence in cross-cultural communication. With that progress, I’ve also set my next goal: to reach an even higher level in the coming months.

I’ve been able to improve my technical skills while continuing to develop my artistic approach. That trust and flexibility make learning here both exciting and rewarding, and I feel like I’m making progress every single day.

Q: What makes working at Wargaming special for you?

A:
For me, it’s openness and genuine support. Whether it’s my lead helping me plan my next career steps or teammates always ready to listen to new ideas, Wargaming has created a space that feels both free and supportive.

I still remember one time when I suddenly came up with an idea I was really excited about. I rushed over to share it with a teammate and nearly tripped on the way! (laughs)

That moment perfectly sums up what it’s like here—ideas can come at any time, and there’s always someone ready to listen and explore them with you.

At Wargaming, we’re not just making games—we’re building a place where creativity, collaboration, and personal growth are part of everyday life. It’s a company that supports everyone, values every idea, and brings people together across cultures and time zones to create something amazing.
